SCOTTISH BORDERS LOCAL HOUSING STRATEGY UPDATE JULY 2006

This second annual update to the Scottish Borders Local Housing Strategy clearly sets out our commitment to improving access to and quality of housing in our area. Our aim in producing this document has been to clarify our objectives in order to better communicate them to our key stakeholders and the general public.

BACKGROUND TO HOUSING (SCOTLAND) ACT 2006

The main purpose of the Act is to address problems of condition and quality in private sector housing (although some provisions also relate to the social rented sector). Owner occupation is now the largest tenure and the whole private sector, including private rented housing, amounts to over 70% of Scottish housing. The Scottish Borders has a 9% private rented sector (one of the largest in Scotland).

NATIONAL REGISTRATION SCHEME FOR PRIVATE LANDLORDS – BRIEFING NOTE

This briefing note outlines the Scottish Executive’s proposals for the implementation of the National Registration Scheme for Private Landlords and other measures within the Antisocial Behaviour (Scotland) Act 2004.

PRIVATE LANDLORD REGISTRATION IN SCOTLAND

Since 30 April 2006, all private landlords letting properties in Scotland must have applied for registration in the National Register of Landlords.

If you know of a tenant/client who would benefit from receiving advice from our Home Energy Adviser our 'Referral Form' is available for agency staff to complete and return to Social Work Services.

Housing (Scotland) Bill 2005 - Summary

The Chartered Institute of Housing have published this briefing, which is a summary of the main proposals in the Scottish Executive’s Housing (Scotland) Bill which was introduced in Parliament on 7 March 2005. The Bill follows the Executive’s consultation paper, Maintaining Houses – Preserving Homes, which was published in July 2004.
